“Hawaii’s newest, “green” public library officially opened on Monday. Governor Linda Lingle, state officials, and a large crowd of Big Island residents attended the dedication of the North Kohala Public Library, which uses wind and photovoltaic energy systems, water catchments and retention systems, and a design that maximizes natural light and air flow.

CDS International designed the $7.8 million dollar, 6,000 square foot library which is located on a four acres along the Akoni Pule Highway. Along with books, the library has twice the shelving space and public computers, and has room for 35,000 materials, and ten public computers.

Last month a human chain of volunteers formed a “huki puke” to move all the existing books from the former Bond Publiic library, one and one-third miles to the new location.

At Mondays ceremony, State Senator Dwight Takamine was presented with a Hawaiian quilt for his tireless efforts on behalf of the new library.”
