The new 22,750 square foot Enlisted Club at Hickam Air Force Base has four major components-a ballroom with a 400-500 person seating capacity, a lounge, a J.R. Rockers Sports Café, and a full-operation kitchen serving the entire facility. Other spaces include lobby, restrooms, staff offices, and storage and receiving areas. Parking for 260 patron and staff vehicles is provided. The functions are organized around a central courtyard that visually connects the main public spaces. To counter the Club’s arid location, landscaped gardens have been incorporated in and around it to create the feeling of an oasis. The complex is oriented to take advantage of trade winds and a year round mild climate while keeping Club-generated noise from disturbing residents of nearby unaccompanied housing.
The Club is dominated by three main sloped roof elements that are reflective of Hawaiian architecture and shelter the facility’s three main functional areas. An open-air lobby overlooks the central landscaped courtyard and connects to the ballroom, lounge and sports café by covered walkways. This courtyard can also be used for additional outdoor dining. The ballroom opens onto two private, walled gardens that may be used for outdoor gatherings or pre-function activities. J. R. Rockers has a large covered lanai that opens onto another walled garden area, providing additional dining and barbecue space. To emphasize the J. R. Rockers signature name, a separate outside entry is provided, also allowing it to operate when the balance of the Club is closed.
