Iao Intermediate School Armory Adaptive Re-Use

The rehabilitation and adaptive re-use of the 1930s Wailuku (Maui) National Guard Armory provides the adjoining Iao Intermediate School with a much needed multi-purpose facility and an additional 2.66 acres for its campus. The more than 50,000 square foot building houses a cafetorium/multi-purpose space, kitchen, custodial service center, the school’s administrative center, library media center, two computer resource centers, TV repair studio/office, multi-classroom meeting space, and nine general classrooms. An outdoor dining area is also provided.

Although the exterior walls are sufficiently supported, today’s more stringent building codes require reinforcing the walls for lateral loads. This reinforcing is placed on the interior of the shell in order to preserve the Armory’s
